Motorways and expressways need a vignette. It is often already in the contract — check, do not assume. Hallstatt’s village parking is tight; a car earns its place on a lakes loop, not for two hours at the water. A coach day covers the village if that is all you want.

A Vienna-only city break usually does not need a car. Inside the Ring, the U-Bahn, walking and a booked tour beat a hire car and a parking garage. Do not collect at Vienna Airport “just in case”, and do not talk a capital weekend into an alpine rental.
